North Carolina Healthy Start Foundation Receives 3 Awards
(Raleigh, NC) –The North Carolina Healthy Start Foundation (NCHSF) recently received three national awards from APEX which recognizes excellence in publications by professional communicators. The Foundation was recognized with a Grand Award for its Healthy Mom, Healthy Baby talking book. The interactive pregnancy resource guide is equipped with audio narration and easy navigation tools for simple access and readability. The publication is part of a long-standing collaboration between the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (Division of Public Health) and the Foundation.
Judges for APEX said, "This extensive, thoroughly researched and clearly written pregnancy guide offers a very effective, interactive book format with superb visuals and illustrations which reinforce the text. The format makes it exceptionally easy to learn everything you need to know about having a baby."
Healthy Mom, Healthy Baby, which is available through local health department clinics in both English and Spanish, offers information on a variety of topics including prenatal care, maternity rights, nutrition and exercise. The pregnancy guide serves as a step by step handbook for expectant mothers by providing them with useful tips and information from their very first prenatal visit to their postpartum checkup. The talking book features navigation buttons to access each page and a drop-down menu for chapter selection. The audio components include a volume control bar and command buttons to stop, end or pause audio narration. You can access Healthy Mom, Healthy Baby by visiting the Foundation website.
The North Carolina Healthy Start Foundation also received APEX Awards of Excellence for its 2009 Report to the Community and for its "Ready, Set, Plan" training curriculum, training materials and outreach materials developed under the North Carolina Division of Health contract for the New Parent Project. The project focused resources in six northeastern North Carolina counties (Edgecombe, Gates, Halifax, Hertford, Nash and Northampton) for two years with the goal of engaging individuals and community groups to make positive lifestyle changes that contribute to having healthier families.
APEX Grand Awards of Excellence recognize outstanding works in each main category, while APEX Awards of Excellence recognize exceptional entries in each of the individual categories.
"We are honored to be recognized with these awards," says Janice Freedman, Executive Director of the North Carolina Healthy Start Foundation. "As we celebrate our 20th anniversary this year this recognition reflects our continued dedication to develop and distribute engaging and compelling health materials that strive to improve the health and well-being of women and young children across the state."
