Medical home educational survey 2008 results
(3/09) - The “Medical home educational materials survey 2008” conducted online last December drew 181 people who shared their thoughts. The survey respondents praised medical home materials produced by the N.C. Healthy Start Foundation in partnership with the Division of Public Health, Women’s and Children’s Health Section, for clear language and effectiveness in educating families about the concept and benefits of a medical home, its use for preventive services and for treating acute illnesses such as fever, colds or ear infections, and about the appropriate use of the emergency room.
The respondents also found the medical home pieces effective in encouraging families to participate in the child’s health care and in educating families about the importance of having a medical home for children with special health care needs, although less highly.
In conclusion, the survey included recommendations to:
-
target primary care providers to reinforce medical home messages and distribute bookmarks
-
focus more on promotion of medical home materials among families of children with special health care needs
-
update medical home bookmarks to say “Remember you can call your medical home 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.”
Thank you to all survey participants for your insightful suggestions and time. Your responses continue to help us improve the outreach materials and draw our attention to medical home campaign needs.
